Building a Scalable Edge-to-Cloud IIoT Solution for Smart Manufacturing

Problem Statement

The client aimed to employ a lean memory footprint ARM-based embedded device, capable of running user-specific applications and facilitating cloud data transmission. This device needed to fetch data from factory floor devices, supporting the underlying device's protocol for data acquisition. Secure machine-to-cloud communication, scalability, and future-proofing with software updates and Field-bus protocol support were essential.

We enabled a smooth digital transformation journey for a manufacturing client by combining ARM-based Industrial PCs, Embedded Linux (Yocto), and Azure IoT Edge. Data acquisition was achieved from southbound devices including OPC UA PLCs, Modbus PLCs, and CAN PLCs, integrated seamlessly into the ARM-based IPC platform.

Our approach ensured:

  • Optimized and up-gradable software stack with lean Yocto builds.

  • Seamless PLC integration with configurable data acquisition.

  • Secure cloud connectivity using OPC UA Pub-Sub over MQTT for real-time insights.
